[edit] Is São Tomé Atlantis?

In his book Mapping the Earth, Livio Catullo Stecchini shows how geographical accounts of Herodotus and others are "accurate" when you take account of the various misconceptions of the ancients.

In one chapter Stecchini examines Atlantis, and suggests that Plato's account can be lined up with the modern-day island of São Tomé (off the west coast of equatorial Africa). He is able to explain away the date and provides some correlative etymological evidence. (And in the chapter of the Sahara suggests that Herodotus' Island of the Sun may well have been Atlantis.)

This is not a Hancockian romance. And, to the limit of my limited expertise, seems credible and worthy of discussion in these pages - even if it's a rebuttal for those of us who struggle to tell our longitude from our latitude.
