The alleged crash landing of an alien spacecraft.
[edit] Discussion
On July 8, 1947, reports emerged from the Roswell Army Air Field that a "flying disk" had been recovered on a ranch some 75 miles north of Roswell, New Mexico. Later the same day, the Commanding General of the Eighth Air Force stated that a weather balloon - not a flying disc - had been recovered. The incident remained insignificant until 1978, when 'ufologist' Stanton T. Friedman interviewed a Major Jesse Marcel, who was involved with the original recovery of the debris. Marcel apparently expressed the belief that the military had in fact recovered the remnants of a UFO of extraterrestrial origin. Charles Berlitz and William Moore published a best-selling book on the subject in 1980. The Roswell crash has since become something of classic case amongst UFO enthusiasts and has been the subject of much media and publishing interest.
[edit] Skeptical Response
At the present time the most likely explanation appears to be that the crashed object was from Project Mogul, a top secret attempt to test giant, high-flying balloons designed to detect Soviet nuclear explosions.
