Jackie Barrett is a self-proclaimed psychic detective and spiritual medium. She makes several assertions about her abilities and detective work. However, there is not a lot of online information about her that she has not written herself. Barrett's websites, thehousethatkaybuilt.com and JackieBarrett.com, provide little evidence, besides Barrett's own words, to substantiate her claims.

She has not applied for the JREF million dollar challenge.

[edit] Biography (according to Jackie Barrett)

Jackie Barrett was born in New Orleans, Lousiana in 1963. Her mother was a spiritualist who was friends with Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Johnny Cash and others. Her father was an American Indian medicine man. When Barrett was 6-years-old she discovered her psychic abilities. The family moved to New York City when Barrett was a pre-teen. She was trained to be a missionary, then went to Haiti and Peru when she was approximately 12 years old until she was 16 (these years are uncertain as Barrett is not consistent with this information). While she was there she was a missionary worked along side Padre Pio.

When Barrett returned to NYC she was approached by the New York Police Department to help them find a missing person. From then on she became the youngest psychic to work with the NYPD. She also knew Andy Warhol and frequented The Factory were she painted and mingled with people such as Halsten and John Lennon. She now works with the FBI, Search and Rescue, and donates to the Red Cross. She currently lives in NYC. Barrett has a sister and a brother named Andrew. She is also married and has a daughter.

[edit] Psychic detective claims

Barrett's main focus is her psychic detective work. She claims to be the official psychic consultant to the FBI, currently works with the New York City Police Department, and to have been involved in over 200 cases worldwide (she once gave the figure of 500 cases). She stated on WeTV's The Secret Lives of Women: Psychics that she has solved every cold case the NYPD has given her.

Barrett repeatedly states that she was trained by the FBI to be a serial killer profiler and claims that she was involved in the Zodiac, Night Stalker, and Jeffrey Dahmer investigations. Barrett never states any specifics such as who trained her, where was she trained, or what her actual contributions were. Additionally Barrett claims to work extensively with Search and Rescue and asserts that she is frequently called in to help find missing people.

[edit] Psychic detective methods

Barrett explains several different methods of how she obtains her information regarding crime. These methods vary from source to source.

Secret Lives of Women version:
Jackie's approach to solving crimes includes talking to the police and family, and visiting the crime scene. She receives her information by "walking behind" the victim and perpetrator and she finds out their thoughts and actions leading up to the crime. She claims she goes "into" the victim and the victim goes "into" her. She says it's like looking through a flip book. Her body temperature changes, her pupils dilate and she "is there with the victim," at the scene of the occurrence and this is how she watches the crime take place.
Haunted New Jersey podcast version:
Jackie: Everything is a clue. Everything I see. I just have them speak and not about the case. Just speak to me and then I put myself into my little locked room and I go into a what -- I guess people would know best, I'll say a meditative state. But it really isn't. And it's just a quiet area and when I come out with my pen and paper I have all the information. So within 6 hours I'm usually back on the phone with them and they're usually back on the case.
Joseph Tittel podcast version, part 1:
Jackie: Yeah, actually, it's um, it's, I try to explain it [her psychic abilities] in layman's terms for, um, for the folks, uh, so many times. It's sort of like a flip book. Looking through, like you may get one part, um, of a crime scene. I saw one brother for instance, coming out. I knew there was one or two, which meant the twins [crime scene challenge, episode 1 [1]]. Um, I, I believe it was even the wrong twin, so I didn't want to say too much.
-Joseph Tittel podcast version, part 2:
Jackie: Um, it's, it's not a big deal for me to, um, even work by math and have Search and Rescue via phone and find the victims.
Creepycast 14 version:
Jackie: Well, you know, I never dealt with photos before, you know I'd pick them up and put them aside and how I usually work is I go through the dead and they show me what happened. So I don't, I don't work like, when I work with detectives and DAs they don't show me photos --
Haunted New Jersey podcast version:
Jackie: When I, immediately, um, had picked up some items on, uh, just by memory. Which I had none of the place, but it feels like a memory and when I picked up on this I, I was very shocked to see that their records and my findings were one of the same.
America's Psychic Challenge, part 1 version:

Barrett claims that she found a baby girl who had gone missing in Texas. Without speaking to anyone, including the authorities, she led the police to the location of the child. She once again claims that she sees the crime scenes play out like a flip book. But also adds that she can name names and provide a description of detailed events. Barrett adds at the end of the interview that she doesn't see angels. Instead she states "I only see what I can prove."

America's Psychic Challenge, part 2
"I leave where I am for a moment. I felt that I was laying on my side, then back up again. Then I saw the, then I saw the victim and he was willing to communicate with me." - Barrett

[edit] FBI claims

One of Barrett's constant claims is that she was trained by and works with the FBI. She states that she was involved in the Zodiac, Night Stalker, and Jeffrey Dahmer cases and maintains that she is the one and only official psychic consultant to the FBI.

Her specialty lies in helping police solve some of the most intense crimes- involving serial killers, missing persons, and even helping to rescue people. She has assisted in over 200 cases & has even worked w/ Americas Most Wanted. Her skills were also utilized on the high profile cannibal case of Jeffrey Dahmer. Jackie never seeks out law enforcement or families who need help- they ALWAYS come to her.
JackieBarrett.com

While the FBI does not employ psychic detectives and the government does not allow other branches of law enforcement to use them, some officers do ask some psychics to work with them, only when they are trying to solve a case that has no leads. The police cannot approach a psychic in an official capacity to ask them for assistance[2].

I've worked on many cases, they call me out, usually on serial killer chases. So I've been involved with the Zodiac case.
Joseph Tittel podcast
Jackie: -one of my main things that I do, um, I'm actually a serial killer profiler... Yeah, I profile serial killers, um, which was the Zodiac and Jeffrey [Dahmer] and the Night Stalker and who the hell would marry him in jail?
Creepycast podcast: Jackie & Hector
Jackie: Yeah, exactly. I really didn't feel fear. Fear is when I walk into a house and there's a serial killer. And you know he's in there and the cops are rushing behind you and this is fear, this is real life, this is fear.
Creepycast: America's Psychic Challenge

Barrett's assertion that she was present at the apprehension of a serial killer cannot include the cases that she mentions (the Zodiac [3], Jeffrey Dahmer [4], and Night Stalker[5]). The Zodiac was never caught. Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested at his apartment by authorities who had not been aware that he was a murderer when they entered his home. The Night Stalker was turned into the police by several civilians who had chased him down and restrained him until the authorities arrived. None of these three cases would have included the raid-style capture of a serial killer.

Barrett does not explain what her definition of profiling is and also does not provide any specific details regarding the cases or the people that she worked with. There is no mention of her or any psychic detectives on the FBI website. Additionally, Noreen Renier also claims to work with the FBI [6]. This directly contradicts Barrett's statement that she is the one and only official consultant to the FBI.

[edit] America's Most Wanted

Barrett claims on her website that she works with America's Most Wanted.

Jackie has been working through Americas Most Wanted and TIPS.
The House that Kay Built

America's Most Wanted responded to an inquiry regarding this claim:

Dear Viewer:
Thank you for writing to America's Most Wanted. Unfortunately, AMW does not use the help of psychics. AMW does its best to apprehend criminals, locate missing children and solve even the toughest crimes. Our show provides the information, but it's viewers like you who do the real job.
...
Thanks for your continued support and interest in America's Most Wanted.
Sincerely,

[edit] Serial Killer Claims

Barrett repeatedly claims that she has been involved with the investigations of Jeffrey Dahmer, the Zodiac, and the Night Stalker. Again, she offers no details or specifics regarding her involvement. The three killers that she mentions are very high profile, with intense media attention and, consequently, a myriad of information regarding the cases. Barrett's participation has never been documented.

Serial killer profiling, which is one of the things that Barrett claims she was trained by the FBI to do, is an inexact method that infers information based on several variables to make educated assertions about the perpetrator [7] based on the crime scene, the murder itself, and any past murders that could be linked. The FBI uses profiling in order to create the personality profile of the criminal.

[edit] Jeffrey Dahmer

Jeffrey Dahmer was a serial killer that was active between 1978-1991. His victims were young men that were Hispanic or African-American. Dahmer was arrested in 1991 after one of his potential victims managed to escape from his apartment and alert the police [8]. The authorities found photos of mutilated bodies as well as human body parts in Dahmer's apartment.

Dahmer pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. He was convicted on 15 counts of murder and was sentenced to 15 life sentences. Dahmer died in prison in 1994 [9].

In addition to the quotes in FBI Claims, Barrett also stated:

Jackie: So I've been involved with the Zodiac case. But somebody, somebody said "Jackie, Jackie Barrett wasn't involved in Jeffrey Dahmer" because they saw the show and there was no psychic in Jeffrey Dahmer show. Uh, hello? What you saw was a movie and no there wasn't any psychic in the movie. But, um, yes I was involved with that.
Joseph Tittel podcast

Dahmer was not profiled prior to his arrest. There was no investigation into him and the police did not have any reason to believe that there might be a serial killer operating in the area. Dahmer managed to hide his activities and the bodies of his victims, sometimes using acid to dissolve them.

[edit] The Zodiac

Barrett only mentions the name of the killer and provides no details regarding her alleged involvement. Additionally, on the WE TV show, Secret Lives of Women: Psychics, Barrett claims to have solved every single case that the NYPD had involved her in, essentially stating that her accuracy is 100%.

The Zodiac killer has never been apprehended [10]. There have been several theories regarding the murderer's identity, but nothing conclusive. The Zodiac was believed to have been active 1968 to 1969. This means that Barrett would have been six years old when the killings ended.

[edit] Pennsylvanian serial killer

Barrett alleges that she was involved in a serial killer case that took place in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. She does not name this killer or give any more details regarding him and his victims. There were no active serial killers in the Williamsport area at any time[11]. Additionally, serial killer cases attract media attention. The scant details that Barrett does provide are too vague to be researched and do not match any documented serial killer case.

Jackie: Well, I work very close with a detective in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Um, it was a very complicated case of uh, several homicides um trying to get the right person and this detective didn't wanna take this case to the grave with her, as she put it... -it [the case] went on for quite some time and it was every day and when I say quite some time, it was an 11 year old case and they brought me into it there was a lot of garbage mixed in, you know, from another psychic and what have you. Uh, people trying to profit off of children dying. You know.
Creepycast 14
Jackie: Well, um, I have to say the, the most recent one, uh, went back to a little girl and her mom in Pennsylvania. And, um, it was an 11 year old case and they had called me in and the DA called me in and the head detective whose been working on it. So, that is actually still one case that they -- we did find out who it was. They ran out of town. And I believe they're still on his trail. But there was a big issue on that because did they have the right person in jail? ...
Gary [Host]: Have you worked on any other cases with this guy [the detective] or is it just that one?
Jackie: Actually, this was the only one because it was so in depth, it was a serial killer and it took a lot of time. And plus they knew where I lived as well.
Gary: Oh, so this, this was a serial killer case that happened out in Pennsylvania?
Jackie: Yes.
Gary: Yeah, it was out in Pennsylvania, right.
Haunted New Jersey Podcast

But there are no more details to indicate the perpetrator or victims. There is not even a clear indication of what happened to the accused as Barrett confusingly states that the killer ran out of town and have not been apprehended, yet she is concerned about whether or not the right man is in prison.

She goes on to talk about the detective that she allegedly worked with.

Jackie: Most definitely. You know, I, actually, uh, there've been times where, one thing for instance after I've worked on a case with her and you know, and she's more of a scientist, actually, she's a forensic autopsy, that she has been many years ago as well. So she's a scientist and this part of the world didn't belong to her. So, uh, there was one time I called her and I always wondered why your Velcro vest is in your trunk. And you know, like why do you do that? And she's a very hardnosed person and very tough, she said "Ahh who's going to shoot me?" and I said, you know, "Why did you say that? Why did you?" ... She calls me one night and she says a funny thing happened today, she said, I took my vest out of the trunk because you mentioned it so many times and as I was walking through the office, she said, I looked down at the label and I realized that the list on the wall, my vest was recalled.
Cat [Host]: Oh!
Jackie: She said, I immediately got another one and that night she went on a raid and if I tell you, if she didn't have it on then she wouldn't be here today.
Cat: Yeah.
Jackie: So, yeah she's my heart, you know, she's my-- she means everything to me... She said, and I love you. And I know she's listening today and she listens to every radio and watches every so I do, and I always tell Jean I love her. Because once you become that connected it never leaves.
Creepycast 14

At first Jean is a detective. Then Jean becomes a forensic scientist. Then Jean goes on a police raid. Barrett gives no other information regarding Jean or her work. The Williamsport Bureau of Police declined to comment on this matter.

[edit] Charles Manson Interview

In addition to her aforementioned involvement in the Zodiac, Dahmer, and Night Stalker cases, Barrett also talks about Charles Manson.

Jackie: So and then I had to, um, of course, about five years ago Charlie Manson wanted to see me and he said that he would give an interview. And they sent me and um, I really -- I wasn't scared, I really wasn't, um, he's like a little shit. Ya know?
Creepycast podcast: Jackie & Hector

She does not indicate how Manson would know who she is, why he wanted her to interview him, what the interview was about or what happened to the interview itself. It is not posted on her website, could not be found via the internet and she does not mention it anywhere else.

[edit] Tennessee Coast Guard claim

One series of events that Barrett seems particularly proud of is when she was called in to Tennessee assist the "water police" while they were searching for a missing member of the Coast Guard. She mentions the incident in two separate podcasts as well as on her website:

Creepycast podcast: Jackie & Hector version:

Jackie: Um, well there's one case in particular, um, that we can speak about. I think, if you want to talk about the Tennessee case. Uh, this was in, um, uh, uh in Memphis and I'm -- I'm there a lot and I work with the search and rescue there. So this was for one of their own and Hector will give you a little bit of the story and exactly why he is called the Cleanup Man.
Hector [Barrett's personal assistant]: Alright, well, that one definitely sticks out in my mind. Um, she's looking for like this missing coastguard [inaudible] with, uh, the captain. And uh, I didn't, he didn't, uh, I didn't check her tank and she went in the dark waters and uh, I saw too much time go by and I didn't say a word I just jumped in. Like, I had to go get her. She was on a bank of a land with the victim lying there. She found him but -- [cut off by Jackie]
Jackie: After that. And of course in those waters there's a lot of arrow heads and one pierced the skins of my suit and it loaded under the suit so where I landed I knew the victim was over on that bank of water, right off the bank of water, so, um, I was just laying beside him and, um, Hector came and um, found me there.

Haunted New Jersey podcast version:

Gary [Host]: Did you do anything else with law enforcement?
Jackie: Yes, I have. They call me on missing children all the time. And actually, just recently, um, I believe it was in Tennessee, I had got -- gotten a call from the water police and they needed help finding one of their own. And it had to do with, uh, heavy drug trafficking. And what have you.

Barrett never mentioned drug trafficking before and does not mention it again. She provides no explaination regarding the connection of drug trafficking and the missing man.

Jackie: So you know, we --it was, it was solved and settled within, I believe, in four days. So they know who to come to... And this last case, like I said, they were going crazy trying to find the fella and within no time they knew just where to drag the lake.
Gary [Host]: So the guy was dead and they did find him based on the location you gave them?
Jackie: It was based on the location and also I told them that somebody fudged some of the computer software that picked up the cameras on the lake and if the person you will know, then I would go into a description had this on, had that, describe everything exactly, even down to birthmarks. So when they pull the person in, it goes on from there.

In Creepycast, Ortiz and Barrett stated that Barrett and the deceased Coast Guardsman were lying on a bank of land. In Haunted New Jersey Barrett states that she found the man's location and informed the authorities to drag the lake.

If the deceased had been in the water and was later found on the bank of land with Barrett, as Ortiz and Barrett first claim, that would mean that Barrett, who has a petite frame, would have had to retrieve a grown man, who was literally dead weight, and move him onto a bank by herself. Additionally, her assertion that she can describe the missing person perfectly is irrelevant in this instance. The Coast Guard already knew what he looked like.

thehousethatkaybuilt.com version:

Most recently Jackie Barrett was called in by the captain of the TN Search & Rescue Team when one of there [sic] own went missing. The amazing Jackie Barrett who was only given a map was able to locate the coast guard & find the sargeant [sic] within hours, in a harsh climate & in deep water. She was awarded for her incredible work through the media & Coast Guard. The family is forever thankful " We couldn't have done it without her"- Tennessee Search & Rescue Team

This claim doesn't mention whether Barrett scuba dived and found the man or only indicated a location. Her statement that she was awarded through the media unproven. She does not link or display any articles regarding this incident on her website and there are none on the Coast Guard site or in online Memphis newspapers. The quote is similarly meaningless. She mentions no one by name and does not explain the lack of evidence.

[edit] Padre Pio claims

Barrett states that she is a voodooist and calls herself a student of religions. She also alleges that she was a missionary when she was younger and during that time claims that she worked along side a priest named Padre Pio.

Jackie: Exactly. I was in, I had the honor of being in the presence of Padre Pio. Uh, before, before you know, he had passed on. And, and I was just a young teenager and I found him amazing, just amazing, and every time I was around him I had this very, um, sleepy, uh, like relaxed feeling, like I used to say "Oh my goodness, I am so relaxed around him."
Cat [Host]: Uh huh.
Jackie: You know and-
Cat: So he-
Jackie: Yeah and as I got older I studied different things and now he's a saint. They made him a saint immediately... I knew about his stigmatas, um, and of course, the public had doubted that. So I'm fortunate cause I've seen more than most, and he knew what I had in turn.
Creepycast 14
I learned to embrace my inheritance through daily conversations with Padre Pio.
thehousethatkaybuilt.com
Jackie has counciled [sic] & studied w/ the likes of such legends as John Lennon, Andy Warhol, Halsten, Christain [sic] Missionaries, Padri [sic] Pio and many more.
thehousethatkaybuilt.com

Padre Pio died in 1968. According to Barrett's Myspace account and her America's Psychic Challenge bio, she was born in 1963. This means that Barrett was 5 years old when Pio died. Additionally, Barrett only mentions being a missionary in Haiti and Peru. Padre Pio was born, lived and died in Italy. For the last 50 years of his life Pio lived in the San Giovanni Rotondo monastery and barely left the grounds [12]. Padre Pio was not a missionary and furthermore traditional monasteries only housed the same sex.

Jackie: -Went on and actually had an awesome experience with um, as a missionary and being around Padre Pio and in his presence and living under the same roof with a lot of these people for you know, several months up to several years... And I remember him saying to me once, "If, if you ever see a winged angel come speak to you, run the other way."
Joseph Tittel podcast

Padre Pio believed in angels[13]. He claimed that he had his own guardian angel[14]. He told others that he would constantly communicate his angel and had faith in them [15]. There is no evidence that Pio believed angels were in any way dangerous or should be avoided.

[edit] Additional services

Barrett also advertises for many different services on her website including;

Séances

Neither of her websites list any degrees, certifications or formal education in any of these fields. By law work such as relationship counseling requires the aforementioned qualifications.

[edit] Séances

Barrett also hires herself out for parties and corporate events [16]. Among her services Barrett can be employed to perform séances and says that hers are similar to Harry Houdini's.

Jackie: So, my séances are a bit different. They compare them to Houdini's séances. There is no one that I know of that can conduct a séance where actual people at the table become participants in the spirit world and start moving about as though and having feelings as though they're coming from a different era and um, it's just amazing because, uh, it actually took me a very long time to master the, the connection with the spirit.
Haunted New Jersey Podcast
-Jackie's rare and unique seance's [sic] have been compared to the great Houdini's seance's [sic], in the way that Jackie passes the spirit around the table and let's [sic] the spirit communicate with the guest instead of just letting the spirit pass through Jackie. Houdini performed seance's [sic] in the same way and they have been incomparably until Jackie.
thehousethatkaybuilt.com

Harry "The Great" Houdini never performed séances [17][18]. Quite the opposite, he spent the later years of his life debunking spiritualists who claimed that they could communicate with the spirit world [19]. After his mother died, Houdini was horrified that self-proclaimed mediums would exploit grieving friends and family members with their claims of clairvoyance. He was able to duplicate their alleged supernatural powers and exposed several spiritualists as frauds. (See our main article on Harry Houdini for further information).

[edit] Involvement with Universities

Barrett claims that she works with several prestigious universities including NYU, Yale, Harvard, and Stanford. Her assertions range from graduating from the schools to lecturing to assisting graduate students obtain their masters degrees.

Jackie: I deal with students from Yale University, NYU, the new school, so I mean. Some, some kids in Harvard. So you know, it's really big. It grew so much that you know, there's some Yale students that got their masters following me around. And you know, learning different aspects of religion and I am a student of religion. I have studied about 14 to 17 of them.
Creepycast: America's Psychic Challenge
NYU STUDENTS REQUIRE JACKIE'S KNOWLEDGE OF SEANCES
Recently Jackie was contacted by NYU students for her knowledge & experience with seances. They need look no further for Jackie is truly the expert on communication with the dead and seances. The students received outstanding grades for there [sic] paper.
thehousethatkaybuilt.com
Jackie: I mean, as for myself, I lecture in Yale, I lecture in NYU. I mean, I've graduated from these schools. I've, I went to school in Bangladesh. I've been all around the world.
-Joseph Tittel podcast
She is known in such universities as Yale, NYU and Standford [sic] in the law crime anylist [sic] department as someone with chilling accuracy for her work with cold cases.
thehousethatkaybuilt.com
Joseph [Host]: -- You're actually helping kids at NYU, correct? A, a thesis is it? Is that what it was?
Jackie: Yes, and uh, Yale as well, um, they were, um, I was chosen for this experiment to help these, um, art students, um, with also, um, finding religion. And they had to follow me around and I was very happy that when they wrote their thesis on me and Yale with guidance under, of course their professors, which had to approve of such a work. Um, and Yale has a great, and so does Harvard, they have a great, um, religion, um, classes and studies and Voodoo is very big in this. So you know, I was happy to find out that the students that I had under my wing all passed, all went on. Uh, one student went on to the MOMA museum... And as well as some students at NYU, um, and, and also in NYU law when something is needed they're sent to me. So I cover a wide range.
Joseph Tittel podcast

Combining all of Barrett's claims she states that she works with art, law and religion department. She claims to have lectured at these schools, without naming the specific university, date or subject matter. She also asserts that the professors at these universities have deemed the method of following someone around to be an appropriate way to conduct research for a thesis.

Yale, NYU, Harvard and Stanford do not list her as a faculty member or employee. Their websites do not mention Barrett in any capacity. Also there is no "law crime anylist" department at any of the schools and no reference to any religion courses in the graduate art programs. Barrett does not provide evidence to substantiate her claim of graduating from any of these universities or in fact any university at all.

[edit] Barrett's handling of criticism

In two incidents Barrett responded to criticism by joking about threats of bodily harm and curses. In a third, Barrett's alleged supporters and friends left abusive and threatening comments to a writer who posted a blog article regarding Barrett's claims.

[edit] Rip-off Report.com

A complaint filed on Rip-off Report was from a client who paid Barrett $1,300 for services that he felt were not rendered[20]. Barrett responded to his claims on Creepycast podcast: Jackie and Hector.

Jackie: Someone brought it to my attention, um, that I was a bad voodooist.
Hector Ortiz [Barrett's personal assistant]: Who said that?
Cat [Host]: A bad voodooist?
Jackie: Some guy, some guy who said that I looked like a Pulp Fiction character -
Cat: What?
Jackie: Yes, I put a curse on him and I'm gonna tell you something.
Cat: [laughing]
Jackie: If you know anything about me.
Cat: I'm sure you're not a bad voodooist.
Jackie: If there was a curse that I could put on him, um, that I probably could, the bastard. But anyway, um, he wouldn't be able to write that. And if I remember correctly and if he is listening.
Cat: I don't know.
Jackie: [Indecipherable]
Hector: We'll be knocking on your door.
Jackie: I will have the jeep running.
Hector: And the rope.
Jackie: And the tape. I'd like to brand him right on his fat ass.
Creepycast podcast: Jackie & Hector

[edit] Lisa Williams

When Barrett was a contestant on America's Psychic Challenge (video) she and the other contestants were asked to do a cold reading for Lisa Williams and was later evaluated by her in another challenge. In Creepycast: APC Barrett states that she didn't know who Williams was at the time and proceeds to criticize Williams' response to her abilities.

Jackie: You know, to be, to say to see Lisa's face cringe and say "She's frightening me." That's you know, you should go see some of these people that I stood by their bedsides and I held their hands where they passed on and it's funny how you know, no one ever said I was frightening then, you know. But she said I was breaking into his aura but if you know anything about me, I don't even believe in that. I don't -- I'm not saying it isn't out there, since I've never seen it.
...
You know, I wasn't breaking into his aura. What I was doing -- my father's a medicine man, I was actually doing a spirit dance. So, we were, we were sitting here when I came home with my American Indian side of the family and we were hysterical laughing. And cause she said, oh she's freaking me out. Freaking her out? You know what she did? She insulted the whole American Indian tribe. I was like, wow, she should learn. Before you open your mouth, you should learn. Breaking into his aura? You know, we, we believe your aura, of course, like other folks do, is your energy.

Barrett first states that she doesn't believe in an aura. Then states that "we", referring to the American Indian tribe, believe that an aura is someone's energy. Additionally, she interprets Williams' comment as not just a slight against her but against an entire ethnicity.

Jackie: So how can I be breaking into his aura? You don't break into someone's aura. That's like breaking into someone's house. Like, like, why would I do something like that? Like it's psychically impossible. What I was doing was, I was challenge, challenging. Not challenge, you know, not, not grabbing the spirit. I was challenging the different spirit around him to, um, see who was more the aggressor um, and get the information from that one... And she was saying how scared she was. What's she talking about, scared?
...
Jackie: You know, it's like, you have to learn. You insulted the American Indians now. Now you gotta watch for an American Indian curse on you.
...
Jackie: And you know, when you say the word "scary" this is, this is what you're doing. You're actually showing how uneducated you are. When you're saying "scary" then on the other tone, you're pushing voodoo, you know, you're banging down a whole race of people as well. So you're trying to say that every voodooist is scary.

Barrett has now accused Williams of insulting American Indians and voodooists. Barrett again threatens Williams:

Jackie: But I was like, you've got to be kidding with me, coming out with that heavy English accent talking to me about you know, "scary". That's not scary. You don't know what scary is. Scary is what I'm going to do to you when I come home.

[edit] In Cold Blog

The article Jackie Barrett: Psychic Detective? was published on In Cold Blog on Feb 16, 2009. I, Star LaBranche, wrote and posted it. The blog soon received a multitude of abusive comments and personal attacks. At no time did Barrett's supporters offer evidence to support or prove her claims.

The first comments were allegedly written by Keven Norris. He was mentioned on Barrett's website, thehousethatkaybuilt.com, under the Paranormal Files section:

Sargent Kevin Norris- works closely with Jackie on official government business.

He wrote [sic throughout]:

You should really learn to do your home work before you go trying to pick people apart. You talked about Mr. Crowley, You talked about young Hector...you left me out. Miss Jackie does work for the government. I am a United States Marine. I got promoted Since Miss Jackie put me on her site. Staff Sergeant Kevin Norris is my name. The nature of her work is beyound remarkable, and yeah, it is confidential, Tell me, Star, of all the things you rant about, you ever actually go to these places and see for yourself, or do you simply just read? I think you are just an upset little girl because you do not have the necessary credentials to actualy see what you are trying to take apart. Much like the war...it is different until you are apart of it and see it with your own eyes, which of course..you never will, of course not, your to busy wrighting silly novels. I will not waste my time trying to indulge you in your lack of intelligence, you clearly do not know what you are talking about, funny, I can not believe I have to defend the likes of people like you.

oh...and correction, bad on me been a long day, I said that " I had gotten promoted since Jackie put me up on her site" not what I meant...I was promoted well after the fact, what I meant was that I am a different rank now then I was when Miss Jackie put me up on her site, but not becuase Miss Jackie put me on the website. Military system doesn't work that way but, I figured I had to correct that before you decided to make a silly crack at me.

The comments eventually turned from abusive to threatening.

I have known Jackie for many years and i have witnessed many times how she has helped people from all walks of life and although i cant explain how it was done never the less it was. It appears that people who have no talent or abilites like to bring down people that do. Star if you had met Jackie for even five minuts, you would be embarrased by what you are writing, and maybe use your time but not your talent since you dont seem to have any to try to understand not everything is black and white. Again if you had any talent you would write something worthwhile, but you keep proving over and over again that you are unable to do so. Further-more you are being looked into i saw your follish goth site your more than a joke and your fat wagon is going to be fixed.
P.S
if your twenty-three you cant count either.
- Yours truly Politian

I do not currently run a website and have no idea what "goth site" the poster is referring to.

let me speak for all of Jackie Barrett's fans , we the people will always defend her , stand behind her, walk beside her ,with her and infront of her. Jackie has been an icon long before an always will. Star your filth will live with you an your kind .Knowing Jackie very well she will shine while you are long forgotten. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes . I say pity the fool who plays with fire. You don't realize what you got yourself into. Just make sure i dont ever come face to face with you. Someone close to you told me what you said about Jackie's Temple in New ORleans . You are nothing an never will be . We love Jackie Barrett .
Tony GT

I e-mailed the Voodoo Spiritual Temple[22] in September 2009 and asked how Barrett was involved with their temple. They did not respond. I have no idea who they are referring to with the "someone close to you" comment. None of my friends, family members, or acquaintances had even heard of Jackie Barrett before I started the article. No one that I know would have been in contact with any of Jackie Barrett's fans. I also have no idea what they claim that I said about the temple.

Me: "Not really, it's actually really bad publicity"
Me: "Ok I'll make sure to try to get in touch with her and relay your message!! I'm in school can't talk"

On Feb, 20 2009 a user on the JREF Forum[23] who claimed to know everything about Jackie Barrett contacted me in September when I first declared my intent to write the article. He stated that he had about 30 pages of information that he wanted to share with me. There was a time lapse and before the article was published he offered to sell me the information. He refused to tell me what his information was pertaining to or how he came across information that he deemed so valuable.

After the blog was posted he repeatedly requested my phone number in order for Barrett to contact me. After I twice refused, he provided me with his phone number and asked me to call him. I did not do so and told him not to contact me again. On Feb 21, 2009 the user sent me the following message:

Would it help if I told you she said one of her priest friends wants to "bang" you.

I contacted the administrator and he received a warning.

Jackie: "Oh you told me of the blog (before it went up) we found out its in legal."
Me: "Actually the blog went up yesterday morning, can't you fkin read? And nothing is illegal about quoting all your fuckin lies."
This was a conversation between me and Jackie when I send her a link to this blog to get her reaction. After a while, I started cursing because as you can read, her ignorance was getting to me and stupidity as well. I quoted everything EXACTLY how it was spelled and written, nothing changed. So you can see all the mistakes a "Yale" student makes!! Oh and Star, how good do you feel that Jackie's friend, a priest, wants to "bang" you? LMAO this is crazy!!

On the JREF Forum the poster that contacted me stated that his name was Mike. The owner of the blog jackie barrett/roman polanski [24] lists his name as Mike. The only time there is a connection made between Barrett and Polanski, other than the website, is when she mentions Polanski during a podcast.

Jackie: -- You know, um, a lot of my private life is being pulled out to the surface and just because you would have tea with somebody or you would go to lunch with someone. It's up on a website and that sucks. And that sucks. Cat, you have things about you that you put up on the website?
Cat: What do you mean "things"? Like --
Jackie: Well, things that folks write. That are quite disturbing like I don't know "I got a picture of Jackie and Roman Polanski" okay and what does it mean?
Creepycast podcast: Jackie & Hector

Other than the website that is offhandedly mentioned in the podcast, there is no connection between Barrett and a man named Mike.

[edit] Ambassadorship

Barrett also claims that she is the ambassador to China. She at first claims on her website to be an ambassador, then in the Creepycast podcast: Jackie & Hector she states that she is an ambassador to China. She also does not explain what kind of ambassador (political, good will, etc) that she is supposed to be or provide any evidence of her supposed ambassadorship.

Cat: What, ah, what happened here with the Chinese government? You're an ambassador now over there?
Jackie: ... But um, but actually with the Chinese government, yeah, it's ah, yeah, I did a bunch of interviews and each -- each area between China and Japan had twenty minutes and they were... I'm not really supposed to say too much because those newspapers will come out, um, but it -- it tells you why. Um, "Jackie Barrett is ambassador" oh and it is pretty weird to be called the ambassador and to be registered with the Chinese government and knowing the Chinese law, I must tell you that I've worked, um, enormously over there.
Creepycast: Jackie & Hector

The areas between China and Japan are North and South Korea. However, she does not specifically mention either country in her claims or state why representatives of these countries would be interested in interviewing her regarding a Chinese ambassadorship. She also does not mention actually being interviewed by a Chinese newspaper.

Jackie Barrett New Orleans Voodoo Queen has been honored by given the title of ambassador Please read why in the following newspapers: Today Newspaper leading Singapore daily paper, Business Times top business paper in Singapore, My Paper Singapore's first bilingual paper and many more worldwide. These are some of the few where you will find the incredible interviews of Ms. Jackie Barrett.
thehousethatkaybuilt.com

All of the newspapers she references are located in Singapore, not in China. The Business Times does not display any articles on the site regarding Barrett. Instead the search redirects to another webpage which displays two articles. One link is broken, the other, "Psych yourself out", is posted on Channelnewsasia.com.

The "Psych Yourself Out" article is about her performance on America's Psychic Challenge and does not make any reference to her being an ambassador. TODAYonline is not searchable. Barrett does not link or display any of these supposed newspaper articles on her website. The results of a Google search relating Barrett as an ambassador only lead back to her own websites.

In addition to her ambassadorship Barrett also claims to have received other awards and titles.

Jackie: ... I am very, very honored by their diplomats, honorary awards you know, for all that I have done in different areas of the world. Um, it isn't the first award, um. I've been given humanitarian awards by presidents also, different titles as well.
Creepycast podcast: Jackie & Hector
Jackie: So I -- I was able to you know, carry on with my studies and move on um pretty fast and I received my diploma and the key to New York City for already have solving cases from Mayor Koch.
Creepycast podcast: Jackie & Hector

There is a list of past recipients for the key to New York City and Barrett is not on it [25]. There is a note at the top of the page that states the list is incomplete. Additionally, Barrett does not specify what titles she was allegedly awarded or the people who awarded them to her. There is no online proof that she has received any awards or titles at all.

[edit] America's Psychic Challenge

One of Barrett's claims that can be verified is her appearance on the show America's Psychic Challenge [26]. The show had eight episodes in its first season and was hosted by John Bruke. It premiered on October 12, 2007.

This Lifetime program pitted 16 psychics against each other to win the title of America's number one psychic. Barrett came in second place. Michelle Whitedove won the title and the $100,000 cash prize after finding a stuntman buried in the desert during the Buried Alive Challenge in Episode 8[27]. Mark Mirales, a highly decorated LAPD detective, judged the two psychics in this episode.

Barrett made several assertions including:

  • "Your grandmother had a big lesson for you"

  • Considered him a family member
  • Could be older brother
  • Don't know the age
  • Brother

Results: She was deemed the second most accurate psychic and received 30 points

Overall score: 45 points

Note: Barrett described the murder to a certain degree of accuracy. However she did not give any details about the killers themselves and nothing that could solve the case. She told the host and the private investigator what the police already knew.

[edit] Episode 5

Sherona, the woman that they had to find, was gagged and had her hands placed into a glass box that contained several cockroaches, her greatest fear. The psychics were to choose from five doors. Behind four of them were people who were perfectly calm and one housed the terrified woman.

At the beginning of the challenge Barrett stated in the interview "Should I bang this one out really fast or just sit back and watch the giggles and shit happen?" Barrett indicated two doors. Door 2 and door 4. In the end she chose door 4 and discovered the young woman.

Crime scene: Palomar Apartments

Instructions: The psychics were told to describe a traumatic event traumatic event that took place in the building. The Palomar Apartments was destroyed by a fire on August 16, 2001 at around 3:30AM. The fire was set by the owner's brother in order to collect insurance money. A mother that was on the fourth floor managed to safely lower her two children to the firefighters. After the children were safe she fell out of the window and died.

Roger Gillus was a firefighter that was present on the night of the fire. He appeared to evaluate the psychics on their accuracy in describing the events. The contestants were taken to the roof in order to do the reading.

Barrett's reading:

  • You wouldn't want to jump [off of the building]
  • She stated that Gillus smelled like a cop or law enforcement officer
  • The fire started on the 3rd floor
  • Somebody went off the roof
  • It was a young woman
  • There were drugs involved

Gillus stated that Barrett did not do a very accurate reading.

[edit] Episode 7

Queen Mary - Remote viewing

Instructions: A man named Dustin stood on the deck of the ship, the Queen Mary. The psychics were instructed to talk to him via a cell phone and describe the area around him.

Barrett's reading:

  • Blue - noted hit
  • Aquarium - noted hit
  • Beige
  • Dusty old color
  • He is alone - noted hit
  • He is standing - noted hit
  • He wonders if you can speak with the dead - noted hit
  • He has read a lot of books - noted hit
  • Going to be redoing things in his life
  • He is located nearby

Result: 13 points

Comments: During the reading this exchange took place:

Jackie: I got a real psycho drama for you.

Dustin: Uh oh. Oh, that sounds like a threat.

Additional Comments: Remote Viewing is the supposed ability to Psychically Sense a target. With this criterion, "the Aquarium" was the only true Hit. The other answers would be considered a "telephone reading" because the psychic gave generalizations about the person on the phone not the true target.

Cowboy challenge

Instructions: Psychics were asked to indicate which of three men was a cowboy. None of the four psychics were able to pick out the correct man.

Results: 0 points

Crime scene: Bar

Instructions: to accurate describe the crime scene.

He shot the man that has escorted him out, Arthur Delong, in the back at point blank range. He died instantly. Sorrells then shot another patron, Edward Sanchez, in his back and his mouth. Sanchez was taken to the hospital and survived the attack. Sorrells is current in prison after being convicted on a first degree murder charge. Edward Sanchez was present at the reading to evaluate the accuracy.

Barrett's reading:

  • Fight prior to the crime
  • Gun
  • Massive amount of blood
  • Murder
  • He [the victim] didn't see it coming "Like a snake attack."
  • (picks out location where the body was)
  • The perpetrator was well known

Barrett was lauded for her performance in this challenge and received the highest score.

Result: 33 points

Overall score: 46 points

[edit] Episode 8

Buried alive challenge

Instructions: The psychics were given a photograph of man that was buried in a 10 acre area. They were asked to find where he was within 30 minutes.

Barrett spent 9 minutes looking for the man. The area that she indicated was 50 yards away from his body.

Result: 15 out of 25 points

Comments: "Time is more important than to pinpoint exact location. Come as close as possible and know that he would be rescued." -Barrett "If you did that at an actual crime scene they would have found him the following minute." -Barrett

Barrett also mentions the results of this challenge in two different podcasts.

Jackie: -- I'm going to say this, and folks can get what they want from it, but I wasn't 50 yards away.
Cat [host]: No.
Jackie: I wasn't. You know, I wasn't 50 yards away. And what I tried to do is what I do best is come as close as possible --
Creepycast: America's Psychic Challenge
Jackie: Exactly, close as possible then you let the dogs in. You don't go any further because you could actually be stepping on the victim.
Creepycast: America's Psychic Challenge
Jackie: Well, well, I -- I've been -- crime investigation is a very difficult. It's, um, I also work with uh, the crime, I work with, um, DAs and also, um, forensics, but you know. You have to know, like about that type of stuff and, and, I, you know, it's pretty difficult because, uh, the last part, where we had to find somebody buried, you, you -- I go by how I was trained.
And how you're trained is you go in a, in a, a small vicinity and trust me it wasn't, I heard it was 50 yards. I, I really, it wasn't 50 yards. But it's a small vicinity and you don't walk over the crime scene and there was some things that threw me off and they were telling me "No, psychically, Jackie." And I said "Yeah, I understand psychically," but I do have a very high IQ and the ants that I saw that were coming up from the ground would only come up if you dig four feet or more. So I, I knew that type of ant wouldn't have come up and there was loads of them so I was getting thrown off. But you also don't go trampling along a crime scene.
Joseph Tittel podcast

Skeptic cold reading

Instructions: The psychics were asked to give a cold reading to a self-professed skeptic. Their readings were judged by Lisa Williams. Before the challenge began Williams explained why she finds it difficult to performing readings on skeptics. "You know, some people are just closed. And they have this brick wall up and as a psychic or a medium, you have to chip away at it." - Lisa Williams

Barrett's reading included statements such as:

  • Strong
  • Heart
  • Graffiti
  • Instruments
  • Music
  • Stomach issues (he states he is lactose intolerant)
  • Mike (he says that he has a good friend named Mike)
  • After the holidays going to be taking a trip -- lots of water -- bridge -- kind that cars go across -- San Francisco
  • Animal lover

Williams observed the readings from another room and during the events stated:

I think she's freaking him out a little bit.
My god, she's scaring me! She's freaky. But good.

These comments are what Barrett interpreted as a vicious personal criticism, as well as a criticism against voodooists and American Indians[29]. After the reading Williams gave her a very high score and told her "I was really impressed--"

Results: 21 out of 25

Comments: "This challenge is a bit difficult because the person is a skeptic. It's very hard to see exactly what he would want to know." -Jackie Barrett

Tillman cold case

Instructions: In the final challenge both Barrett and Whitedove were asked to evaluate a cold case where a husband and wife, Harold and Joni Tillman, were murdered then buried in Yucaipa, California [30].

The psychics were asked to do three readings. One at the locations which the bodies were found, one at an impound lot where the couple's car was because the police believed that it might have been used to transport the bodies, and finally to speak with three of Joni Tillman's friends. They received one evaluation on all three challenges.

Location reading:

Barrett generated several hits including the method of death as strangulation as well as a knife wound. She claimed that one of the victims had something under his nails, which contained DNA (Skip Tillman had managed to scratch a perpetrator). She stated that there were three people involved. Two men and one woman.

Car reading:

In the impound lot Barrett stated that the car had belonged to the victims and it had been cleaned out then abandoned. Again, she stressed the importance of DNA evidence. She described her vision as like "Being there and you can't do anything about it."

Friends:

Barrett was asked to do a reading for three of Joanie's friends. The three women stated that they wanted closure. They believed that the motive for the murders was money. They added that Skip had sketchy business dealings and someone was angry with him. Before Barrett gave the reading she stated that she doesn't like family members to be involved with cases because of the things that she might say could be hurtful.

The first thing Barrett told the women is that Joni came to her three times; once screaming, once on the floor, and was then present in the room. One of the women began to cry after this statement. Barrett stated that Joni would talk on the phone while clearing the counter. Also that Joni had received late night phone calls that were "warning" her.

Barrett also said that she saw a child. The Tillman's did not have a child, but the three friends stated that they were extremely fond of their dog, Teddy, and that he was the equivalent. She continued by saying that there were three people involved, two that were "hands-on" and another that was an accomplice. She added that they knew who committed the crime. They stated that they had an idea of the guilty party and Barrett told them that they were correct. At the end of the reading Barrett once again stressed the importance of DNA evidence and said that the DNA under the nails would break the case.

The Host, John Burke, stated at the end of the challenge the detective heading the investigation decided to send the fingernail samples back to the DNA lab in order for them to be tested again. In September 2008 a tip was generated that provided the police with a mug shot of a possible perpetrator [31]. As of January 2009 the case is still unsolved [32].

Result: 32 points

Series results: 68 points

Barrett lost to Whitedove by 2 points.

[edit] Quotes

Some psychics claim that they cannot talk about the details of their cases or their clients out of respect for their privacy. Barrett does not mention the full name of any of her clients. Alleged victims and family members have not spoken out and stated that Barrett has solved a case or found a missing person.

[edit] Film Consultations

Barrett repeatedly claims that she is a popular consultant for movies pertaining to voodoo. However, Barrett has no page on the Internet Movie Database [33].

I have been consulted on most major movies that deal with Voodoo and as an authority on occultism.

Jackie: A lot of actors and also a lot of producers will have me come on their set and they'll have advice or they'll have me come to their house for the screening and so they just feel that if I'm there that things are going to work out a bit better for them.

[edit] The Skeleton Key

In her claims she specifically mentions the film The Skeleton Key.

Jackie: Ah, so the movie [The Skeleton Key] was actually inspired by, you know, quite a bit of, um, my own work... producers and they saw a picture of my brother and myself and they said, you know "oh we were thinking about doing this movie in Louisiana and it sorta reminds us of you" and you know. And Papa Justify is a real person. So, they had the press party at the temple [Voodoo Spiritual Temple], um, and we inspired quite a few movies... It was like a Voodoo For Idiots, cause we did that book.

There is a book about voodoo which is titled The Complete Idiot's Guide to Voodoo. Barrett is not listed as an author or contributor and her name does not appear in the book itself.

The movie's IMDb page does not state that the story was at all based on fact and there is no evidence that Papa Justify was a real person. Additionally, The Skeleton Key does not feature the use of voodoo. Instead the supernatural elements are based on hoodoo, a predominantly African-American type of folk magic[34].

[edit] Humanitarian Efforts

Barrett also claims to work extensively with the Red Cross and says that the only reason she appeared on America's Psychic Challenge was to support the organization. Barrett credits herself with raising a significant amount of funds for Hurricane Katrina victims and talks about writing a book where all of the profits would be donated. She also states that this is the reason she has received some of her alleged awards.

Jackie: So the point of the story is if the book House that Kay Built wasn't 88 pages it wouldn't came out in time to put all the proceeds into Katrina.
Gary: Yeah, it came out right before Katrina hit?
Jackie: It came out right before... Katrina was coming and I was able to, uh, send everything to the Red Cross. Directly. So it didn't even come to me.

Jackie: Exactly and it [The House that Kay Built] was, uh, there, people were able to go straight to the Red Cross from there and also make donations and different, um, institutes, such as the Virgin Megastore and several other large places, um, had me -- the Jackie Barrett Fund. So it's, um, I guess they would, uh, double the dollar. At some points, they were doing a lot of work and I had, I never kept up on how much it was, but I believe that we've raised over, probably 9 million for New Orleans.

Beyond Investigation responded to an inquiry regarding this assertion by stating that they posted a link to the Red Cross website on their homepage and encouraged their podcast listeners to donate to the cause. They added that they have no way of verifying the amount of money that was raised as a result of their promotions.
